Empowering Individuals & Communities Through Research, Training, and Collaboration

What we do

(African Institute for Behaviour and Social Development) is a dynamic Pan-African organization dedicated to promoting the life, wellbeing, and dignity of all people across the African continent and beyond. We leverage the power of research, training, and collaboration to empower individuals and communities, fostering a brighter future for Africa.

The African Institute for Behaviour and Social Development is a centre of excellence committed to strengthening human capacity through high‑quality training, specialised courses, and comprehensive capacity‑building programmes. The Institute delivers evidence‑based learning experiences designed to equip professionals, practitioners, and institutions with practical skills that respond to contemporary behavioural, social, and mental health challenges across Africa and beyond.

With a strong network of experienced scholars, researchers, and professional trainers drawn from across the globe, the Institute combines international best practices with local contextual knowledge. Its training programmes are carefully structured to meet global standards while remaining culturally relevant and applicable. This approach ensures that participants gain both theoretical understanding and practical competence that can be directly applied in their professional and community settings.

The Institute is guided by a clear vision to become the leading institution for training and capacity development in trauma care and management; substance use prevention, treatment, and recovery; targeted mental health education; stress management; and related behavioural and social development fields. Considerable emphasis is placed on tailored behvioural and mental health trainings for specific groups such as religious leaders, traditional leaders, educators, and community-based practitioners, recognizing their critical role in promoting wellbeing at the grassroots level.

The Trauma Training Programme is structured into a progressive learning pathway comprising Trauma Course 1, Trauma Course 2, Trauma Course 3, and an Advanced Trauma Course. These courses provide a comprehensive understanding of trauma, its psychological and social impacts, and evidence‑based approaches to trauma‑informed care and management. Participants who successfully complete the full programme and achieve the required pass mark in the final assessment are awarded a Certificate of Completion, signifying competence in trauma care and intervention.

The Substance Use and Addiction Programme offers a suite of courses built on globally recognized curricula designed for addiction professionals, service providers, and policy makers. These courses address substance use prevention (UPC), treatment (UTC), recovery (URC), and policy development, ensuring alignment with international standards.

In addition, the Institute provides Targeted Behavioural and Mental Health Training structured into Volume A through Volume D, each covering key aspects of mental health in a clear and accessible manner. This modular design supports easy understanding, practical application of knowledge, and effective integration of mental health principles into professional practice and community engagement.

AFRIB recognizes the importance of accessible mental health services and psychosocial support.
